SCENERY PAINTING FOR THE AMATEUR MUSICAL THEATRE and PANTOMIME
SANTA'S WORKSHOP
Designed and painted by - Brian Willis.
Performed by Pupils of Bushmills Primary School at Christmas 2004

Backcloth 18 foot wide by seven feet high. 5 ltr paint tin [below left door] for scale.

This was a dilema, as I didn't want the colours and detail to outshine the young performers. I rarely use black outlines in my scenery painting (There is no such thing in the real world) but made an exception in this case to emulate an illustration from a child's book or perhaps a cartoon film. I had trouble trying to kill this black paint when I came to paint another scene on this cloth. I have tried to give the impresion of the light being reflected off the snow into the room, hence the light on the roof rafters etc. I should have moved the rocking horse further into the room so it didn't look as if he had just run into that pillar!

And here is the Santa's sledge I built and painted for the above play. There was just enough room for the child playing the part to sit in this. The sledge ran on castors hidden up underneath. (since removed for another job!)
