Detail of above set. The handkerchiefs were real. And there was a backing flat of a church and roofs with snow behind this window . The window frame (and its shadows and high lights) were painted on - trompe l'oeil. As were the shadows of the "pegs" in the wooden pillars.

Here is a case of painting first to get all the depths right and the thickness of the frame correct then, when satisfied that it all looks right, I cut out the voids with a power jig-saw. If I tried to cut it out first before completing the painting I would inevitably have missed putting in a thickness.
