Nick tells us our core piece is Dalradian schist that is around 450 million years old, the minerals in it are quartz veins – the hard white band and the thinner brown bands that are iron stained. The platy mineral on the chamfered end is mica, these schists are referred to as micaceous schists. Nick is not sure of the actual depth of this piece (Which came from a haphazard scrap pile) but it could be from up to 200m below the ground. | |
