SCENERY PAINTING FOR THE AMATEUR MUSICAL THEATRE and PANTOMIME
ALICE IN WONDERLAND - page one

Designed and painted by Brian Willis
Performed by "Merlins", Childrens' Theatre, Grimsby 2006

This group travel around Primary Schools in England giving magic shows. They commissioned me to paint this small backcloth as part of a themed Alice in Wonderland illusion entertainment. The brief was 'bright and cheerful with a sense of depth'. They asked that there should be no specific reference to the 'Alice in W' story as all this is done with props etc in their show. (Apart, that is, from the signpost and large toadstools.)
Alice in Wonderland cloth
Size of canvas - 10 feet wide by nine feet high. Photo taken in workshop with natural top light. All the toadstools are painted over with "invisible blue" which will shine under Ultra Violet lights. I decided to outline the forground elements with black to give the painting a child's book illustration look.
