SCENERY PAINTING FOR THE AMATEUR MUSICAL THEATRE and PANTOMIME

ALADDIN Hullabaloo 2012 page two
Design, built and painted by Brian Willis
Performed at the Courtyard Theatre, Newtownabbey December 2012

There are two permanent pieces either side of the stage. Audience Left was a House piece bookflat. See below.

Both the door and window are practical.

I always try to have one flat sloping when building bookflats, this helps the stability. Unfortunately I chose to make the door section the sloping one. - silly mistake- this meant I had to put on a spring loaded "door closer" to make the door close on its own when opened.

For various reasons I built the flats for this show in my garage and the drive, so there is a strange background behind each photo. Incidentally Hullabaloo's van could only take nine foot long pieces. And my garage only take seven feet high pieces. So everything was built in sections to be assembled once we reach the theatre. Hundreds (I exaggerate a little) of bolts involved. The join, in this case is below the zigzag ornamentation. (That's why it is painted like this)

The "cracks" also hide joins in the plywood. Below is a photo taken of this piece in use during a no-makeup dress rehearsal. The Constable (Aaron Kavanagh) poses.
