SCENERY PAINTING FOR THE AMATEUR MUSICAL THEATRE and PANTOMIME
ALADDIN - page fourteen
Designed and painted by Brian Willis. Set Construction - Sean Magee
Performed by Coleraine Provincial Players (1997)

I Painted this cloth in a day. (The work was done in the warehouse of a large shopping mall hence the shop assistant in picture for scale.)

Note the big creases which shows that these cloths need to be stretched in some way whilst on public display

There's a nasty seam running horizontally across the middle. Cloths are usually joined, like this one, with a small overlap and double stitching. The cloth is usually hung so that the protruding edge of the overlap is top-most (nearest the grid) so that any light from above does not make a shadow. However this was a double-sided cloth which was flipped over (upside down) to reveal the other side which meant that one side inevitably ended up with the protruding edge at the bottom. I hope you are following this as there will be a test afterwards!

Note too the Venetian blind effect where they were using a square roller to roll it onto. We solved this problem later by threading the square pole inside a round plastic drain pipe.
